His Story
Snow Hill Cemetery is the final resting place for several generations of the Woods family. Lonnie Woods' grandparents, Rufus and Adeline Woods, and his parents, Samuel and Neaver Woods, are also buried here.
Lonnie Woods was born in 1933 in Mebane, North Carolina. As a young man, he moved to Washington, DC, to explore greater opportunities for employment. His first job was at National Airport, where he worked as a cook. Washington, DC, turned out to be the land of opportunity. It was the place where he met his wife, Marion Woods, with whom he shared 46 years of marriage. Lonnie’s career was spent working at Giant Foods, where he was a butcher and Assistant Manager of the Meat Department. He was the youngest male child of 10 children.
Lonnie was laid to rest beside his oldest brother, Samuel Woods, affectionately known as "Tex," and his second-to-the-youngest brother, John Thomas Woods, who served in the US Army. Lonnie loved to visit his family in North Carolina and would often travel with his brothers John and Bill, who also lived in Washington, DC, whenever their schedules allowed. Lonnie had a hearty laugh and could be heard telling a joke or two. His pride and joy were his two grandsons, Karl and Patrick, who reside in Maryland.
